Jim Block has 22 years of commercial meteorology experience, 20
of them at Meteorlogix. He helped found Meteorlogix’s Meteorological
Operations (MetOps), and designed and helped develop the Meteorlogix
weather database and software to process satellite and radar data
for Meteorlogix products.
Prior to Meteorlogix, Block worked at the Great Lakes Weather
Service Company in Green Bay, Wisconsin, doing radio and utility
forecasting. He also co-founded the meteorology department at Republic
Airlines in
the Twin Cities. After the airline was forced to shut down its forecast
operations, Block helped to move the department to Meteorlogix,
which was looking for ways to diversify beyond selling radar monitors.
In addition to forecasting, by using his programming expertise Block
automated much of the data collection at Meteorlogix, and in the
process created Meteorlogix’s weather data collection system
and database.
Block eventually oversaw all meteorological software development
at Meteorlogix, and was named a certified consulting meteorologist
(CCM) by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) in 1989. In 1998,
Block was placed in charge of all Meteorlogix Meteorological Operations
including the acquisition of Weather Services Corporation of Boston.
Block has been a member of the AMS since 1976, and serves on the
AMS Board on Private Sector Meteorology. He is a past president
of the National Council of Industrial Meteorologists and is currently
a member of the Council’s board of directors.
Block holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in meteorology
from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
